Polygon zkEVM vs Linea — The zk-Rollup Battle Heats Up
Polygon zkEVM and Linea have emerged as the two leading zk-rollups, and the competition between them is shaping up as the cleanest L2 head-to-head of 2026.
On metrics, Polygon zkEVM leads on TVL ($2.4B vs $1.8B), while Linea leads on daily active addresses (380K vs 290K). The split is informative: Polygon has captured more institutional and DeFi flow, while Linea is winning on retail and consumer applications via the deep MetaMask integration.
Technically, both are EVM-equivalent zk-rollups, both use Plonky2-class proving systems, and both have similar gas costs. The differentiator is ecosystem support — Polygon has deeper exchange integration, Linea has the MetaMask installed-base advantage.
For the rest of 2026, the watch-item is which rollup gets the first credible “Layer 2-native” consumer app. Neither has yet, but both are closer than the other zk-rollups. The first one to land that gets to claim the category lead.
Polygon for institutional flow. Linea for retail wallets. The 2026 winner gets defined by whichever lands a Layer 2-native consumer app first.
